Job description

The Philosophy Department at Northern Arizona University welcomes applications for the position of Future Faculty Fellow in Indigenous Philosophy broadly construed. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the fellow will hold the rank of instructor and teach a 1+1 load. Following the successful completion of the fellowship year the position is convertible to a tenure track appointment (with a 3+3 teaching load). As such, the Department is enthusiastically recruiting a specialist with the expectation that the Fellow will be converted to a full time, tenure track appointment to the Philosophy faculty at NAU. 

The Future Faculty Fellow program is part of NAU’s Elevating Excellence Initiative, a key aim of which is to promote and support Indigenous community-driven teaching, mentorship, and scholarship. In seeking to fill this position, the Philosophy Department aims to expand its curricular offerings and scholarly output in Indigenous Philosophy.

Area of Specialization (AOS): Indigenous Philosophy broadly construed

Area of Competence (AOC): Open, but the department has a preference for areas of competence that complement Departmental strengths.

Responsibilities Include:

  • During the Fellowship year the successful candidate will teach a 1/1 load.
  • Develop curricula in Indigenous Philosophy.
  • Demonstrate substantial progress towards publishing in their specialization including delivering a research presentation to the NAU community.
  • Starting AY 25-26 the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a large capacity course in Indigenous Philosophy that fulfills the Indigenous People’s requirement in NAU’s General Studies program as well as upper division courses in their areas of specialization or competence as determined by departmental needs.

***This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation.  Opportunities for remote work are rare.***

Minimum Qualifications

  • ABD or PhD. in Philosophy or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Indigenous Philosophy broadly construed, as evidenced by dissertation topic, publication record, or teaching experience.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • A publication record in the AOS or demonstration of future research potential
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or potential for future success in mentoring students through teaching and/or research, and scholarship
  • Demonstrated experience working with people from all backgrounds
  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship, teaching, community engagement, and service that forwards NAU’s Elevating Excellence goal
