Job Title:

Job Summary:

The Department of Philosophy at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin Fall of 2024, contingent upon funding approval. This position seeks candidates with an AOS in Epistemology, with the candidate well-versed in the core of the analytic tradition. For the AOC, we especially welcome Philosophy of Technology, Cognitive Science, and Philosophy of Science.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach, among other things, an undergraduate course on Epistemology that addresses core issues in the analytic tradition, and a course from among the AOC's listed above (Philosophy of Technology, Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science). The expected teaching load for this position is two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years). In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in service to the Department and College, contribute to the Department's efforts to recruit students to the major, and maintain an active research program.

Minimum Qualifications: The candidate should have completed their Ph.D. in Philosophy by the Fall of 2024. Also required are the following: a strong record of and commitment to undergraduate teaching, evidence of scholarship and a promising scholarly research program, a willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment, and an understanding of and commitment to support the Jesuit mission of the University of San Francisco.

A complete application must include a cover letter that describes your interest in joining USF and furthering its Jesuit mission and values, research interests, teaching philosophy and commitment to undergraduate education, and preparation to teach students from diverse backgrounds. We also require an updated curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy that describes your experience in the classroom, evidence of teaching ability (e.g., sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a teaching portfolio), a writing sample that demonstrates your scholarship, graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (requested upon submission of your application, and uploaded separately by your recommenders). Additional materials may be requested later in the process.

Questions can be addressed to mailto:[email protected]. For full consideration, applications must be submitted by November 15, 2023. Please note that first-round interviews will be conducted by Zoom during the first two weeks of December.

In order to serve all of our students, including Black-identified and Latinx students-who make up 15% and 21% of our undergraduate student body respectively-the University of San Francisco is seeking to hire a cohort of new faculty whose scholarship and/or community-engaged research and creative work focuses on the experiences of people from underrepresented communities including but not limited to Black and Latinx communities, or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion more generally, and who have proven expertise and experience in mentoring students from these communities or first generation college students.

USF is entering into the third year of a very successful faculty diversity hiring initiative. Junior faculty are invited to participate in mentoring, community building and peer to peer opportunities coordinated by the Vice Provost for Equity, Inclusion and Faculty Excellence. Faculty also enjoy peer support through affinity groups such as the https://myusf.usfca.edu/aaasfc, https://myusf.usfca.edu/black-community-council, https://myusf.usfca.edu/lgbtq-caucus, and https://myusf.usfca.edu/la-colectiva-latinx.
