Job description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a Senior Lecturer who will teach and serve as the Director of Human Rights Curriculum in the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights. This is a full-time position with a three-year, renewable term beginning January 1, 2020. The Pozen Family Center for Human Rights is internationally recognized as one of the leading university centers for human rights, a reputation based on its innovative undergraduate curriculum and internship program, its support of graduate and faculty research, and its sponsorship of groundbreaking interdisciplinary conferences and working groups on new approaches to human rights thought and practice.

The Senior Lecturer and Director of Human Rights Curriculum will teach courses that contribute to undergraduate and graduate offerings in human rights, carrying a regular yearly teaching load of six courses with reductions to accommodate his or her work as Director of Human Rights Curriculum. As Director of Human Rights Curriculum, the successful candidate will help oversee the Pozen Center’s existing curricular programs, including the undergraduate minor, Human Rights in World Civilizations Core sequence, study abroad program in Vienna; coordinate interdisciplinary offerings with the M.A. programs in the Division of the Social Sciences and Division of the Humanities; and help lead the Center’s development of curricular initiatives. The Senior Lecturer and Director of Human Rights Curriculum will supervise, evaluate, and provide pedagogical training for post-doctoral instructors, graduate students, and Lecturers who teach Human Rights courses; coordinate the teaching of visiting faculty; and implement university guidelines on appointment and promotion. The position will also develop and participate in scholarly programming and workshops, supervise human rights research conducted by graduate students and post-doctoral fellows associate with the Center, and work closely with graduate students and fellows to develop proposals for grants and fellowships. The Senior Lecturer and Director will work with the Faculty Director to ensure the success of these programs and other initiatives that support doctoral student education and will lead the Center’s strategic development and implementation of curricular goals.
