Postdoctoral Research Scholar/Associate Director (Fixed Term) (EXPIRED)

Columbia University, Center for New Narratives in Philosophy and the Philosophy Department invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar for the period July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020, with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on funding and satisfactory performance.

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will serve as Associate Director of the Center for New Narratives in Philosophy (CNNP). In this role, the Scholar will work with Center Director, Professor Christia Mercer to oversee CNNP programming and related projects (e.g., the book series, Oxford New Histories of Philosophy), help pursue funding, and engage in independent research related to CNNP. The Scholar will participate in collaborative projects with other scholars, staff and students, and contribute to center programs and events.

During each term, the Postdoctoral Research Scholar will hold a secondary appointment as a Lecturer, part-time in the Department of Philosophy, and teach one philosophy course each semester. Salary will be approximately $64,000 (which includes teaching salary).

The minimum qualifications are a PhD in philosophy, with research interests in the history of medieval or early modern women. Some training in gender studies, feminism, or critical race theory is desirable. Digital and administrative skills are beneficial. Candidates must hold the doctoral degree by July 1, 2019 or have received it within the previous three years.

The overarching goal of the Center for New Narratives in Philosophy is to create a site for the most innovative work in the history of philosophy and promote diversity in philosophy as it is practiced and taught. Growing out of the success of the series, Oxford Philosophical Concepts (edited by Christia Mercer) and Oxford New Histories of Philosophy (co-edited by Christia Mercer and Melvin Rogers) and the increasing awareness that an accurate account of philosophy’s history has the potential to influence and diversify the discipline of philosophy, the CNNP organizes conferences for international scholars, workshops for graduate students and faculty, and encourages new scholarship.
