Job description

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

 

Position: The Department of Philosophy at Northern Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Philosophy to begin in August 2019.

Duties and Responsibilities: The course load will be 12 credits per semester, with multiple preps each term. The teaching responsibilities will include Ethical Theory and various applied ethics courses (computer, legal, medical) as well as developing new courses that complement the needs of the Department. There will also be additional service responsibilities in support of the department, college, and university. The appointment will require having an active research agenda. This is a campus-based position.

Minimum Qualifications: MA in Philosophy; evidence that PhD in Philosophy will be completed by July 1, 2019; AOS: Applied Ethics; AOC: Ethics or Social Justice; graduate coursework evidencing AOS and AOC; record of effective college teaching in Philosophy; ability to develop and teach courses in areas that complement the needs of the Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level; ability to work with others; ability to incorporate application of laptop computers in the learning environment; good oral and written communications skills.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Earned Ph.D. at time of application; record of excellent college teaching, specifically in AOS and AOC; specific knowledge of philosophy of race, legal ethics, computer (big data/social media) ethics, bio-medical ethics, and environmental ethics; experience teaching a range of applied ethics courses, ethical theory, and courses at the intersection of philosophy and social justice; research and teaching interests at the intersection of philosophy and social justice; demonstrated commitment to diversity.
