Professor of Instruction of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy & Religion within the College of Arts and Letters at The University of Tampa invites applications for a non-tenure-track, full-time Instructional Faculty position (Professor of Instruction) beginning in August 2019.   

The University of Tampa is a medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially based private institution of 9,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa’s dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. Teaching load is 4 courses (16 credit hours) per semester at the introductory undergraduate level. The Area of Specialization (AOS) is Open. However, either the Area of Specialization or the Area of Competence must include Africana Philosophy and/or Philosophy of Race (both broadly construed). Willingness to develop competence to teach either or both of the following undergraduate courses is highly desirable:  an intro-level World Religions course (run under a Religion/Religious Studies course designation) and an intro-level Modern Philosophy (i.e., 17th and 18th-century Western philosophy from Descartes through Kant with an emphasis on metaphsyics and epistemology) course. In addition, depending upon the needs of the department, the successful candidate will teach Introduction to Philosophy and may be permitted to teach additional intro-level courses that focus upon diverse perspectives in philosophy.

The department is committed to rigorous undergraduate teaching that introduces students to an inclusive vision of philosophy encompassing classic figures and texts, contemporary debates (both within and outside of academia), and a wide range of voices and perspectives, including many that have traditionally been marginalized. 

Teaching experience is preferred.  Ph.D. in Philosophy must be in hand no later than August 15, 2019.  The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching, skilled at attracting a diverse group of students to become interested in philosophy and become philosophy majors, have a broad background in philosophy, and have teaching competencies that complement those of the existing faculty in the department.  Other responsibilities include holding regular office hours, student advising, assisting with ongoing outcomes assessment procedures, and additional professional service in support of the department, college, and university.

The Department of Philosophy & Religion offers a B.A. degree in Philosophy and a Philosophy minor. Its many activities include the preparation and coaching of a successful Ethics College Bowl team and an active Philosophy Club.
