AOS Philosophy of Mind or Neurophilosophy

AOC categories Non-Western philosophy, esp. Asian; environmental philosophy

LAKE FOREST COLLEGE invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor (PhD) or Instructor (ABD), of philosophy beginning August 2019. We seek applicants with broad interests and a love of teaching to offer a variety of courses in philosophy. Candidates must be able to teach an annual section of philosophy of mind, and preferably to teach two or more courses annually in some non-Western philosophical tradition, (esp. Asian philosophy). The Philosophy Department has long embraced a dual mission: (1) to provide comprehensive coverage of the central areas of philosophy for majors, including those interested in graduate study and (2) to encourage connections to other disciplines, to support other programs and the general mission of the College and to emphasize the ways philosophical reflection can enhance study in other disciplines. We will be interviewing at the 2019 Eastern Division APA Meeting January 7-10 in New York. For more information on our department, see: http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/programs/philosophy/.

A highly selective liberal arts college located on Chicago’s North Shore, Lake Forest College enrolls approximately 1,600 students from more than 40 states and from more than 70 countries. Lake Forest is one of the most diverse small colleges in the Midwest with nearly 40% of our student body comprised of domestic minority and international students. The majority of our STEM pool is female and also includes a significant number of first generation and traditionally underrepresented students. Faculty members normally teach 3 courses per semester (introductory to advanced undergraduate) with the usual non-teaching duties, including directing senior projects.  Salaries are competitive.  At Lake Forest College, the quality of a faculty member’s teaching is the most important criterion for evaluation. The College also expects peer-reviewed publications and active participation in the College community. Lake Forest College embraces diversity and encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Lake Forest College’s philosophy major is organized historically, and the department is proud of its long history of very diverse elective offerings. Essential courses for this position include a 200-level course in philosophy of mind suitable for both philosophy and neuroscience students, and topical courses in some non-Western tradition, preferably Asian philosophy. Course offerings in other areas are welcome, based on the candidate’s interests and expertise, as is willingness to contribute to other programs on campus, such as Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Environmental Studies, Social Justice, etc..
