The Position:

The McDevitt Center and the Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies seek outstanding applicants for appointment as Associate McDevitt Chair in Religious Philosophy and Faculty Co-Director of the Manresa Program. As Associate McDevitt Chair in Religious Philosophy, the successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment within either the Department of Philosophy or the Department of Religious Studies. As Faculty Co-Director of the Manresa Program, the successful candidate will hold an additional administrative appointment within the McDevitt Center. The Manresa Program, a central pillar of Le Moyne College’s strategic plan Sempré Avanti, is an intentionally designed, four-year program that connects vocational discernment and career preparation to Le Moyne’s Jesuit, liberal arts education by helping students to integrate their academic and intellectual development with their personal, professional, and spiritual growth. Launched in 2015-16, the program has been supported by two grants (totaling nearly $60,000) from the Lilly Foundation and the CIC/NetVUE program. The program has been enthusiastically embraced across all College constituencies and has grown rapidly. It currently enrolls nearly 400 students/year and has engaged nearly 50 faculty/staff mentors. In addition to his/her responsibilities as a faculty member, the Associate McDevitt Chair in Religious Philosophy and Faculty Co-Director of the Manresa Program will work in partnership with the Career Advising Co-Director of the Manresa Program to shape the ongoing development of the Manresa Program. She/he will have special responsibility for integrating the Manresa Program with Core and disciplinary courses and creating programs (e.g., workshops, lecture series’, etc.) that provide opportunities for further engagement with the themes of the Manresa Program among students, faculty, and staff. 

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in either Philosophy or Religious Studies/Theology;
  • Demonstrated scholarly expertise and record of publication in classical and/or contemporary strains of virtue ethics;
  • Special interest in questions of character development and/or the nature of meaningful lives;
  • Familiarity with Ignatian spirituality, Jesuit higher education, and pedagogical theory;
  • Demonstrated strengths in program development or program expansion;
  • Exceptional organizational skills.

About the McDevitt Center:

The McDevitt Center at Le Moyne College is an endowed center supported by a 50-million-dollar gift from the estate of Robert and Kay McDevitt. The Center is intended to position Le Moyne as a leading regional and national sponsor of hi-impact programs and initiatives that advance awareness of the latest research in Computer Science, Physics, Management/Information Systems, and Religious Philosophy.

Each of the Center’s programs and initiatives is developed in conjunction with, and led by, a nationally prominent or an especially promising emerging figure who is working at the forefront of one of these disciplinary areas. Each of those invited to lead an initiative through the McDevitt Center are appointed as McDevitt Chair or Associate Chair in the relevant discipline. The position of McDevitt Chair/Associate Chair may be either a tenure-stream appointment or a short-term, visiting appointment (normally not exceeding one academic year) that does not necessarily require full-time residence at Le Moyne College and may be held concurrently with other appointments.
