Job description

San Francisco State University’s Department of Philosophy offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Ancient Greek/Roman Philosophy beginning August 2019. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service to the excellence of our diverse academic community.

The Department of Philosophy is a dynamic teaching and research program with a long history of achievement.  It offers two B.A. degrees (in Philosophy and in Philosophy and Religion) and the M.A. degree (in Philosophy), a Pre-Law Emphasis, and a rich array of courses that address the diverse backgrounds of its faculty and students. Its M.A. program attracts students from around the world and has a successful record of placing graduates in doctoral programs and teaching positions. Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in Ancient Greek or Roman Philosophy, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing program of scholarship in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or similar discipline. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

Preferred:

  • Record of effective teaching contributions in Ancient Greek/Roman Philosophy.
  • Active record of scholarship related to specialty area.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works.
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities.
  • Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments.

Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
