About Graduate Teaching Assistantships

A Graduate Teaching Assistant is responsible to the Head of Department and is expected to undertake teaching and teaching-related duties within the Department - not normally exceeding eight contact hours per week - while undertaking research leading to a PhD. Approximately 80% of their time will be spent on their doctoral research and 20% on their GTA responsibilities.

Each of these three posts is for four years’ duration. The first year of the Assistantship involves shadowing teaching, assessment, and supervision processes within the Department - followed by teacher training at both Departmental and College level. Full teaching duties begin in second year.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the University's standard academic and English language entry requirements. It is expected that applicants will also hold - or expect to hold by October 2012 - a Masters degree in politics or a related social science discipline.

These posts are open to suitable UK/EU and International (i.e., outside the EU) applicants. Please note though that the awards cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only. International applicants (and those not eligible to pay UK/EU tuition fees) must demonstrate at the time of their application that they can fund the difference in tuition fee rates.

These posts are for full-time study only and applicants must be able to commence their studies in October 2012.
