Professor of Philosophy (Epistemology)

This is a permanent civil service position at the W-2 level in the “Bayreuth Track” scheme. The post-holder may be promoted to the W-3 level upon successful performance review of research and teaching in accordance with the Bayreuth Track Personnel Development Model for professors at the University of Bayreuth.

The ideal candidate will have an area of specialization in epistemology and preferably areas of competence in philosophy of science, philosophy of statistics and probability, causation, philosophy of public policy. The candidate will have a track-record of research published in top international refereed journals. Candidates will be expected to contribute to the strategic research initiatives as set out in the University of Bayreuth’s “Structure and Development Plan STEP 2020+”.

The postholder will play a key role in our decision-oriented BA and MA programmes in Philosophy & Economics. Effective teaching ability in the areas of EPISTEMOLOGY relevant to the Philosophy & Economics Programme is essential.

Requirements for this position (according to Article 7 and Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG) are a university degree, the ability to conduct scholarly work (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant‘s doctoral research), a Habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification), and proven excellence in teaching. Evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement, for example as a junior professor or in a non-university environment, will also be considered. A further prerequisite is the ability to teach in English. Only applicants who are 52 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
