Sacred Heart University, the second-largest independent Catholic university in New England, offers more than 70 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs on its main campus in Fairfield, Conn., and satellites in Connecticut, Luxembourg and Ireland. More than 8,000 students attend the University’s six colleges: Arts & Sciences; Health Professions; Nursing; University College; the Jack Welch College of Business; and the Isabelle Farrington College of Education. The Princeton Review includes SHU in its guides Best 379 Colleges – 2015 Edition, “Best in the Northeast” and Best 296 Business Schools – 2015 Edition. U.S. News & World Report ranks SHU among the best master’s universities in the North in its annual “America’s Best Colleges” publication. SHU fields 32 division I athletic teams and has an award-winning program of community service.

The Philosophy Department and College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure track faculty position, with the possibility of renewal.  The instructor’s primary responsibility each semester will be to teach multiple sections of the University required critical thinking/logic course, The Art of Thinking. This course provides an introduction to informal and formal logic with a goal to improve students’ critical thinking skills by addressing them directly and individually.

The ideal candidate is an excellent teacher, experienced at teaching critical thinking or logic, and would enjoy teaching logic to freshmen. The successful candidate’s area of specialty should be Social and Political Philosophy or Metaphysics.  A Ph.D. is preferred though exceptional DB's will be considered.

For consideration, applicants should submit a CV and a letter of intent describing their training and experience in logic, ability to contribute to the course as described above, other teaching interests and experience, and general research program.  Official transcript(s) of graduate work and three letters of recommendation are also required.  Send all materials to: Dr. Michael Ventimiglia, Search Committee Chairperson, HC 125, Sacred Heart University, 5151 Park Ave. Fairfield, CT 06825. Electronic submissions will be accepted at [email protected]. Review of applications will begin on April 22nd and continue until the position is filled.

Ecumenical in spirit and led by the laity, Sacred Heart University is dedicated to excellence in academics and to the Catholic intellectual and liberal arts traditions.  We are looking for individuals who value the University’s Catholic identity, tradition and spirit, and support its commitment to the intellectual and ethical development of our students. Sacred Heart University is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
