Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Care Ethics, beginning Fall 2016.  Teaching load: 1-1.  We seek a person with a strong research agenda and an interest in practical aspects of some area of health care ethics and/or bioethics.  The postdoctoral fellow will actively contribute to the intellectual life of UNC Charlotte and the greater Charlotte region through meaningful interactions with faculty and community members, including presenting research and/or issues related to bioethics, joining a hospital ethics committee, or conducting other engaged work complementary to their research interests.  Faculty mentors will be available to help the fellow develop work for publication.

Our department embodies an intertraditional approach to philosophy; we engage in work within and between philosophical traditions, aiming to build a philosophical culture where sub-disciplinary boundaries are less important than the resources they provide for addressing concrete practices and problems. We value dynamic relationships between theory and lived experience in which each informs and transforms the other. The Philosophy Department offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy.  Our department has connections to other units across the university, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and we are closely affiliated with UNC Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics (http://ethics.uncc.edu/).  For more information on the Department, including its vision for intertraditionality, see our website: http://philosophy.uncc.edu.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (http://www.uncc.edu/) is a doctoral, research-intensive university, located in one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas on an expanding modern campus. One of sixteen campuses in one of the oldest public university systems in the United States, UNC Charlotte offers over 27,000 culturally diverse students a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Charlotte's metropolitan area is rich in cultural and racial diversity (over 40% Hispanic/Latino and African-American) and our faculty strives to reflect and interact positively with that population. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences houses 20 departments in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical sciences, and military sciences, as well as 8 research centers and institutes and 13 interdisciplinary programs.

The postdoctoral fellowship requires: 1) a doctoral degree in philosophy within the last eight years; 2) evidence of an active research program in health care ethics and/or bioethics; 3) evidence of successful teaching; and 4) a demonstrated commitment to promote diversity as a value in the department, college and university. Preference will be given to candidates whose work fits with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ emphases on globalization, sustainability, urban/suburban studies, and/or digital scholarship.  Experience with grant applications is preferred, but not required.  The teaching load is one course per semester.  Salary competitive.

As an EOE/AA employer and an ADVANCE Institution that strives to create an academic climate in which the dignity of all individuals is respected and maintained, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte encourages applications from all underrepresented groups.

The finalist is subject to a criminal background check.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be submitted by March 25, 2016.
