Job description

The Penn State College of Engineering (www.engr.psu.edu) and the Rock Ethics Institute (rockethics.psu.edu) are seeking a postdoctoral scholar to develop an ethics curriculum in the Biological Engineering (BE) major offered by the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE). The aim of this postdoctoral fellowship is to contribute to the development of a versatile ethics program for implementation in ABE and across other engineering majors. The scholar will work with faculty, staff and students from ABE, the Department of Philosophy, and possibly other departments to: 1) understand the BE curriculum and current approaches for integrating ethics; 2) develop a revised curriculum that provides a solid foundation in ethics and the ability for students to apply this knowledge to ethical problems and situations found in engineering and professional life; 3) establish a curricular model that can be implemented in other engineering departments both at Penn State and beyond, and disseminated to other engineering professionals; 4) use the new curriculum to comprehensively address and evaluate related student outcomes such as those associated with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); and 5) participate in multi-disciplinary seminars and conferences

The Rock Ethics Institute has a threefold mission to promote ethics education, research, and outreach. In particular, we aim a) to integrate ethics education across the Penn State curriculum and to provide informal ethics education to our community in order to underscore and strengthen a culture of integrity and responsibility at Penn State, and b) to serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research in the field of ethics that is both collaborative and policy-relevant. We pursue our educational aim by working with faculty across the university to provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to integrate ethics into their undergraduate classes. We have also launched a program to prepare STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to become leaders and educators in the field of research ethics.

The successful candidate will receive training and mentorship and will be expected to work on co-authored publications and engage in research that will contribute to their own research trajectory. Scholars may also receive experience working on grants.  Applicants must have completed all of the requirements for their Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree by the appointment date.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled, therefore, incomplete applications may be at a disadvantage.  Initial Skype interviews will be scheduled with candidates.

Penn State is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
