Job description

The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a Lecturer in Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies. This is a full-time, renewable position with appointment terms of one to five years with a nine-month service period.  It will begin on September 16, 2016.  We seek broadly-trained individuals with a strong record of interdisciplinary teaching excellence. Candidates should be able to bring a global perspective to introductory and upper division courses in Women’s and/or Gender Studies and Labor Studies.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher (or foreign equivalent) in a field appropriate to the area, including, but not limited to: Gender Studies and/or Women’s Studies, Critical Political Economy, Development Studies, Feminist Geography, Economic Anthropology, Political Science or a related field specializing in gender, labor, economic development, global inequality, social change and social justice. We welcome scholars whose expertise emphasizes one or more of the following area(s): globalization; labor studies; work and labor relations; gender studies; law and policy; and who can contribute to our Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies major through teaching and service.  Given the major’s emphasis in community engagement, fieldwork or practical experience (volunteer, nonprofit or community organizing) is highly valued.

The successful candidate will teach three or more of the following classes: Introduction to Globalization; Introduction to Political Economy; Women in the Global Economy; Gender and Development; Gender and Law; and contribute to the Labor Studies track and Gender Studies minor.

The School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences offers a range of innovative interdisciplinary majors. We welcome applicants representing diverse perspectives and approaches.  Successful candidates will have demonstrated teaching excellence with diverse student populations and be expected to integrate new pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning.  The position primarily contributes to an interdisciplinary major in Ethnic, Gender and Labor Studies but could also support other interdisciplinary majors at UW Tacoma, such as: Law and Policy; Human Rights; Politics, Philosophy, and Economics; Global Studies; and/or Urban Studies. Applicants should explain how their teaching will contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of these majors and UW Tacoma.

The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was established in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach at its foundation.  It has evolved into a thriving downtown campus that serves students of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds in the South Puget Sound.  Faculty have access to the resources of a major research university, including an extensive library system, but work and teach within a small campus setting.  Our campus provides a unique environment for the development of creative teaching, research and community collaborations. The campus commitment to diversity is central to maintaining an atmosphere where students, staff, and faculty find abundant opportunities for intellectual, personal and professional growth within our campus and broader community. 2.      Curriculum vitae, including a list of courses taught,
