Job description

Thanks to the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Department of Philosophy at Occidental College invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral Fellowship. In collaboration with faculty in the department, the Fellow will aim to develop courses that enhance undergraduate research, especially for underrepresented and first-generation students, and foster collaboration with community institutions. An interest in, and ability to implement, innovative uses of digital technology will also be valued.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start date of August 1, 2016. (AOS) and (AOC) are both open, but the responsibilities of the Fellow include:

  • Teaching four courses per year over a two-year appointment, including:
    • Introduction to Philosophy;
    • Two of the following - Philosophy of Art, Philosophy of Race, Environmental Ethics, Global Justice, Feminism, or Contemporary Moral Philosophy;
    • A new research-focused first year seminar that employs digital approaches to knowledge production or sharing, and builds partnerships with community organizations.
  • Mentoring and supervising one or two students per year conducting summer research projects and up to one student per semester serving as “education-in-action” facilitators attached to the Fellows’ courses.
  • Participating in two Center for Digital Liberal Arts Summer Institutes that support course and assignment development.
  • Participating in two year-round faculty development workshops with other Fellows, faculty, and the Center for Community Based Learning.
  • Maintaining an active research program.

Occidental College offers a unique combination of a rigorous academic program, small size, and diverse student body, located among the natural and cultural resources of Los Angeles. The College, and the Department of Philosophy, value creativity, academic accomplishment, and civic engagement, and aim to realize an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to the liberal arts in the context of a close-knit community of excellent teacher-scholars and engaged students. Occidental College is an equal opportunity employer. Underrepresented philosophers are strongly encouraged to apply.
