Assistant Professor in the Ethics of Emerging Science and Technology

Science, Technology, and Society Program and Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies North Carolina State University

(Job Posting #60154)

The Program in Science, Technology & Society (STS) and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at North Carolina State University (NC State) welcome applications for a faculty appointment in the Ethics of Emerging Science and Technology at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2016. The appointee’s tenure home will be in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, with faculty status in the STS program.

Candidates should have a PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field by start date.  The successful candidate will have superior teaching and research abilities. Special consideration will be given to candidates who conduct research and teaching on ethical issues in the life sciences, including genetic engineering, synthetic biology, and related areas.  Other possible areas of interest include ethical issues related to climate change, sustainability, food security, data sciences, or geospatial analytics. The standard teaching load will be four courses per year, two courses in STS and two in Philosophy; and could include both graduate and undergraduate courses.  Courses that contribute to both programs will be welcome.  The candidate will be expected to advise students in the STS major.

We are interested in candidates who can engage across disciplines and contribute to the intellectual community of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and the STS program. This faculty member will be expected to develop new courses that enhance interdisciplinary collaborations within the College and with STEM faculty and departments across campus. This hire will also have the opportunity to participate, if they wish, in developing new ethics education and training programs for the college and university as a whole.

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence, strong research and publication skills, and the potential for future research productivity.

NC State is located in Raleigh, the state capital and heart of the Research Triangle. The university is consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities in the country. The area is ranked regularly as one of the nation’s best places to live and work. The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies has a faculty active in research and a reputation for excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The STS program, which has a growing undergraduate B.S. and B.A. major, is housed within Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and has affiliated faculty from various colleges on campus. NC State’s STS program is the only such program in the Carolinas, but it has a rich 25 year history in training students to think critically about the intersection of science and society.
