Job description

The School of Humanities at Barton College invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in Philosophy at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Fall 2016.  

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach all undergraduate courses in Philosophy, as well as occasional courses in Religious Studies. The typical teaching load is eight (8) total three (3) hour credit courses per academic year, with a class size capped at no more than 25.  Most courses are cross-listed with General Education core, and include focus on one of the following skills: writing, oral communication, or critical thinking.  Course delivery options include face-to-face, hybrid, or online.  Ongoing professional scholarship and service, student recruiting and advising, and participation in the School of Humanities and college are expected.  

Qualifications

  • Required: PhD completed by August 2016
  • At least twelve (12) hours of graduate study; non-Western Traditions preferred
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching is preferred  
  • AOS: History of Philosophy
  • AOC: Non-Western Philosophy and/or Religious Studies, Comparative Philosophy, Ethics
  • With roots in the Christian (Disciples of Christ) heritage, Barton College is a Liberal Arts institution in Eastern North Carolina with a diverse population of many first-generation college students.  The search committee is therefore particularly interested in candidates who are committed to teaching excellence
