Job description

The College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia seeks to fill the William and Linda Porterfield Chair in Biomedical Ethics with a distinguished scholar and accomplished teacher. The appointment will be made at the rank of professor and will begin on August 25, 2016.

We invite applications from scholars who have made significant contributions to bioethics, broadly interpreted. Their disciplinary grounding may be in philosophy, religious studies, political theory, anthropology, sociology, etc. The successful candidate will have a departmental home related to his or her academic discipline.

Duties will include teaching four courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate level in consultation with the chair of the Department. The holder of the chair will also be expected to provide service to the Department and to the University. Ideally, he or she will play a leadership role in an interdisciplinary community of scholars in bioethics.
