Job description

McGill University

Assistant Professor, Philosophy of Science, or History and Philosophy of Science

The Department of Philosophy at McGill University invites applications for a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor, with an AOS in either Philosophy of Science or History and Philosophy of Science, commencing August 1, 2016. Candidates must hold a PhD at the time of taking up the appointment. They should have already demonstrated excellence in both research and teaching. The successful applicant will be able to teach in areas other than their research specialization(s) in ways that will complement the Department’s current teaching strengths. We also expect the successful applicant to contribute to the McGill History and Philosophy of Science programme (see https://www.mcgill.ca/hpsc/history-and-philosophy-science), and to interact constructively with colleagues in other units who have overlapping interests.

In addition to our undergraduate programme, widely acknowledged as one of the best in North America, we have a small professionalized doctoral programme that attracts excellent students in a range of fields. The successful candidate will contribute substantially to both of these programmes. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester, with a two-semester system. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

McGill University is Canada’s most international university with an outstanding record of scholarship in many fields. The main campus of the University is located in the centre of Montreal, a vibrant multicultural city in the francophone province of Quebec. The language of instruction at McGill is English. The Department of Philosophy is diverse in its areas of research excellence and respectful of this diversity. We encourage applications from individuals who can contribute to this pluralism, who work, or are open to conversations, across traditional philosophical boundaries, and who can complement our existing research strengths. (For information about these strengths, please see http://www.mcgill.ca/philosophy/.)

Applications should include: a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a research dossier comprising a statement of research interests and a sample of academic writing (20 to 30 pages); a statement outlining the applicant’s approach to teaching and teaching experience, together with teaching evaluations where available (maximum 10 pages total); and  at least three letters of reference.

Deadline for receipt of applications and all supporting material: October 31, 2015.

Inquiries about this position may be sent to the Department at [email protected].

The Department will not be interviewing at the Eastern APA meetings but will interview long-listed candidates by Skype in the first two weeks of January.  Short-listed candidates will be invited to visit the Department.

McGill University is committed to diversity and equity in employment. It welcomes applications from: women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, persons of minority sexual orientation or gender identity, visible minorities, and others who may contribute to diversification.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
