Assistant, Associate or Full Professor for a New Initiative in Precision Medicine: Bioethics and Biomedical Policy

The University of California, San Diego has made an unprecedented commitment to advance human health by applying computational biology to analyze big data in biomedical research. The University of California, San Diego invites applications from outstanding candidates for TENURE TRACK or TENURED faculty positions. These positions are part of a bold multi-discipline, multi-year initiative that spans the entire University. Each appointment will be made jointly between at least two departments from across the campus in order to facilitate collaborations in new inter-disciplinary fields. They include Health Science (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), the Jacobs School of Engineering, the Divisions of Physical Sciences, Biology, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, the School of Global Policy and Strategy, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The initiative in precision medicine seeks to transform medicine through advances in omic-scale diagnosis, therapy, engineering and computer science, imaging and data integration that enable insights into disease mechanisms. Appointments generally will be at the Assistant or Associate Professorial level and in exceptional cases at the very early Professorial level. There will be five separate areas within the overall initiative:

1) Epigenetics and Genomics;

2) Informatics and Systems Medicine;

3) Microbiome;

4) Sensors, Devices, and Imaging; and

5) Bioethics & Biomedical Policy

Candidates may submit an application to one or more of these areas.

Successful applicants will be expected to teach both graduate and undergraduate students in the participating departments and establish a vigorous program of high-quality research that focuses on innovative approaches in one of the targeted areas.

Specifically, regarding the Bioethics and Biomedical Policy search:

The university is particularly interested in recruiting candidates who display the highest standards of excellence in research, teaching and professional activity in biomedical ethics, biomedical innovation and/or regulatory policy. Successful applicants will be expected to help build a genuinely interdisciplinary and preeminent program in practical ethics, which includes social science, policy and bioethics. Although the research focus within practical ethics is open, we are especially interested in candidates whose research focuses on questions about the implications of new medical technologies.

Applicants at the Assistant Professorial level must have PhD or MD completed at the time of appointment and have demonstrated the potential to achieve independence in their publications and funding records. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated strong leadership or a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting. Applicants to the Associate and Full Professorial levels must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent in the area of interest, are expected to have established independent publication and funding records as well as a national reputation in their field of research. The level of appointment and salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on UC pay schedules.
