Bioethics/Medical Humanities

The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Philosophy and Classics

Position Announcement: Associate or Assistant in Bioethics and/or Medical Humanities.

The Department of Philosophy and Classics at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate in Bioethics and/or Medical Humanities to begin Fall 2016. 

Required Qualifications: All applicants must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or directly related field, or terminal degree in a medical or bioscience discipline, by August 31, 2016. The methodological approach and specialization is open, but the Department seeks a candidate with a distinguished record or strong promise of distinction in bioethics research.  Areas of interest include medical ethics, health care ethics, ethics of medical technology, medical bioinformatics, medical humanities, and end-of-life issues.  The department also seeks a candidate with potential for collaborative work outside the department.

The Department offers a new major in Medical Humanities alongside majors in Philosophy, Classics, and Humanities, and minors in all these fields plus Religious Studies.  The Department also has an M.A. program in Philosophy.

All applicants must provide evidence of a record of scholarly and professional publications commensurate with the rank applied for by the applicant. All applicants must provide some representative evidence of high-quality teaching in relevant courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. All applicants must be willing to teach a range of courses including some of the following: Medical Ethics/Bioethics, Ethical Theory, Introduction to Medical Humanities, Medical Humanities Senior Seminar.

To be considered at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, successful applicants must be able to articulate a research agenda, have an emerging record of publications, excellent teaching skills and commitment to service.

To be considered at the tenured Associate Professor level, successful applicants must have an established research agenda, a strong record of publications, excellent teaching skills with demonstrated effectiveness and a track record of service. Tenure is contingent on Board of Regents approval. 

Preferred Qualifications: For applicants at the Associate Professor level, demonstrated ability to acquire external funding. Preference will be given to candidates prepared to teach in a variety of areas within the Department. Experience working with Institutional Review Boards desirable.

Responsibilities: Teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at the Main and Downtown campuses; participate in teaching courses in the Department's degree programs; pursue an active research and publishing agenda; and serve the University, profession, and community. Standard teaching load is 2/2 on semester calendar.
