Job description

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellowship to work on the Project Population Ethics: Theory and Practice, which is associated with the Future of Humanity Institute, and hosted by the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. The post will be fixed-term for the period 1 October 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 30 September 2016, with a possibility of extension for a further year.

The postholder, who will hold the title Research Fellow in Philosophy, will occupy an office in the Future of Humanity Institute, Littlegate House, St Ebbe’s, Oxford.

The postholder will work under the supervision of the Director of the Project, Professor Hilary Greaves, and will also work in collaboration with the other members of the Project’s team (Professor Nick Bostrom and Dr John Cusbert) and with external collaborators. The Research Fellow will explore cutting-edge ideas at the frontier of current research on the theoretical and/or practical aspects of population ethics. The balance between the theoretical and practical aspects is flexible, and will be tailored to the research interests of the successful applicant, but applications from candidates interested in working on the practical half of the project are particularly encouraged. She or he will also be expected to produce a number of publications, single and/or co-authored, as a direct consequence of his or her involvement with the Project.

The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise in philosophy, with evidence of the ability to undertake significant research in Population Ethics which will contribute to the aims of the Project. To be eligible to apply, candidates should have received the degree of PhD by 1 October 2015, or at least have submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by that date,
although applicants who do not meet this criterion will be considered if they have attained a Bachelors or Masters degree and a level of research achievement that is comparable to a PhD, as evidenced by their publications.
