Courses are given both on campus and on the internet. Teaching is to a large extent carried out by teams of teachers. Therefore a general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people. A position as Senior university lecturer includes 20% research and 80% teaching and administration.

Qualifications and appointment criteria

To be qualified as a Senior university lecturer in theoretical philosophy requires a PhD in philosophy, or a corresponding scientific competence. The candidate is also required to demonstrate pedagogic skills within the field of philosophy.

Special and equal emphasis will be paid to pedagogic skills and scientific competence relevant to the subject. Particular weight will be given to pedagogic skills and scientific competence within core areas of theoretical philosophy: the history of philosophy, epistemology, logic, metaphysics (including philosophy of mind), philosophy of language and philosophy of science.

In addition, importance will be attached to the applicant’s administrative ability, the ability to develop and manage members of staff, and to the applicant’s ability to interact with the surrounding community and to spread knowledge about research and development within the field of philosophy.

Teaching is primarily performed in Swedish. Candidates should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within one year of employment.

The place of work is Umeå and a high degree of attendance at the department is required.
