Job description |
UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-RIO GRANDE VALLEY (UTRGV), BROWNSVILLE CAMPUS. Rank: Full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Philosophy. The Department of Philosophy at The University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley seeks candidates whose work, particularly in areas of health, medicine, and human flourishing, engages with the cultures and languages of the Rio Grande Valley in the U.S./ Mexico Borderlands by considering broader ethical, social, or political issues (e.g., poverty, race, gender, class, religion, language, immigration, etc.). Strong candidates will demonstrate the potential to spark student interest, develop relationships within the community, and contribute to the creation of professionals with a broad, critical, and situated view of issues in their field. A Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field from an accredited university is required prior to start date of fall 2015. Experience teaching a wide variety of courses is preferred. The strongest candidates will also be able to teach some or all of the following classes: Medical Humanities, Area Specific Critical Thinking (e.g., addressed to future medical professionals/the MCAT), and upper division courses that situate health/medicine/human flourishing in a larger ethical, social, economic, political, gender, or religious context. Evidence that candidates can work with local, national, and international communities, community organizations, and non-profits is also beneficial. Finally, a demonstrated history of generating and supporting student interest in philosophy will be favorably considered. UTRGV has 11 colleges and schools that offer 61 baccalaureate degrees, 50 master’s degrees, and 4 doctorates in the liberal arts, fine arts, education, sciences, business and entrepreneurship, engineering and computer science, and health affairs. The university has nearly 30,000 students enrolled in its graduate and undergraduate programs and it will open a medical school in 2016. UTRGV is located in one of the fastest growing regions of the United States. The department is seeking candidates who are committed to UTRGV’s guiding principles (see, http://www.utrgv.edu/en-us/about-utrgv/transition-plan/guiding-principles), which include promoting access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.A. The department is seeking high quality faculty members who will pursue global excellence in teaching, research, and service, including applied and translational research to address critical local, state, national, and global needs and providing a leadership role in fostering economic and community partnerships to help solve local, state, national, and global problems. |
