The Department of Philosophy and Arts Studies in Research and Writing (ASRW) at UBC are seeking applications for a 12-Month Lecturer in Philosophy of Mind and Studies in Research and Writing. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field, and experience teaching academic writing in university environments using research-based, theoretically rich pedagogical frameworks, including writing in the disciplines or genre-based approaches. The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to teaching, will have a track record of teaching excellence, and will be able to teach undergraduate courses in both philosophy of mind and academic writing. Arts Studies in Research and Writing (ASRW) is a unit specializing in the study and teaching of research and writing in the disciplines. ASRW courses introduce Faculty of Arts students to the discursive practices of the disciplines. Members of the unit also support undergraduate student participation in research activities (e.g. conference participation) and assist faculty who offer writing-intensive courses in their departments. The successful candidate can expect to teach ASRW courses, including WRDS 150, and participate in designing the future growth and development of ASRW. The position involves a workload equivalent to teaching 24 credits and undertaking service responsibilities over the 12-month period of the appointment. Teaching assignments will include sections of WRDS 150, an upper-level undergraduate course in philosophy of perception, and a cognitive systems course (COGS 200). In partial fulfillment of the overall workload, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake curricular and administrative responsibilities involved in teaching across three units and participating in student advising, departmental service, events and initiatives in PHIL and ASRW. This 1-year leave-replacement appointment is expected to commence September 1, 2015. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Please send applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching interests and teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching ability and effectiveness in the fields of the appointment, three letters of reference, and a sample course outline for WRDS 150 to: Simone Dharmaratne Department Administrator Department of Philosophy University of British Columbia These materials should be sent electronically to her at [email protected].
