Job description

The Philosophy Department of Loyola Marymount University invites applications for two (2) three-year, non-renewable Postdoctoral Faculty Fellowships, beginning in Fall 2015. Each fellow will teach three undergraduate core courses, normally two preparations, per semester. Area of expertise is open, but successful candidates will be expected to teach lower-division Philosophical Inquiry courses and upper-division Ethics courses. Fellowships are primarily intended for candidates who have completed the Ph.D. within the last three years, though exceptional ABDs may be considered. Applicants should have a passion for undergraduate teaching, a strong commitment to the liberal arts, and a serious interest in the mission that animates Catholic higher education, particularly in the Jesuit tradition.

The position is full-time and includes benefits. A startup fund of $3,000 for relocation expenses or professional development will be available to each fellow, along with $1,500 per year for conference travel and further professional development.

The program’s objective is the development of fellows as teacher-scholars. Selected candidates will belong to the Bellarmine Society of Fellows, composed of postdoctoral fellowship holders in a range of disciplines and their LMU faculty mentors. The Society will serve as an intellectual and social community supporting all fellowship holders during their time at LMU. Activities of the Society will include formal seminars and workshops on the Catholic intellectual tradition, Catholic social teaching, and Ignatian pedagogy, as well as participation in other professional development opportunities offered, for example, through LMU’s Center for Teaching Excellence.

Applications must include: (1) cover letter (outlining area of expertise, teaching and research interests, and interest in LMU’s mission), (2) curriculum vitae, (3) teaching portfolio, (4) sample of scholarly writing, and (5) three letters of recommendation. Items 1 through 4 should be emailed as a complete package, no later than March 20, 2015, to [email protected].

Signed letters of recommendation should be scanned and emailed by the recommender directly, no later than March 20, 2015, to [email protected]

Only electronic applications will be considered. Incomplete applications or applications arriving after March 20, 2015 will not be considered.

Further questions about the Fellowship may be directed to: Brad Elliott Stone, Chair, Faculty Fellows Search Committee, [email protected].
