Thomas Nelson Community College seeks dynamic, qualified individuals to join the faculty at the fourth largest community college in the Virginia Community College System. As a comprehensive community college, Thomas Nelson offers quality transfer degree programs, strong technical and pre-professional programs, and is known for its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development. The college also provides dual enrollment courses in partnership with local school divisions and developmental studies for students who need preparatory work to be successful in college-level coursework. Daytime, evening and weekend courses are taught at the Hampton, Southeast Center and Historic Triangle campus location as well as off-campus sites.

The college seeks candidates committed to the mission of the comprehensive community college and experienced in working with a diverse student population, including adult learners and at-risk students. The successful candidates will be committed to academic excellence and continuous improvement through professional development, assessment, program and course development, and creating a collegial environment of civility, collaboration and open communication. The college strives for a faculty of content experts who are also knowledgeable about best practices, innovative strategies, and instructional technologies that support teaching and learning. Outreach and service to the college community (developing partnerships, academic advising, and committee work and faculty governance) along with the ability to teach 15 credits per semester, are also expectations.

Contribute high levels of energy, engagement, creativity, and leadership to the teaching and learning environment. Design, develop, and assess curriculum. Serve as an academic advisor and contribute to College governance and to service. Collaborate in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and/or scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from an accredited institution including a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in coursework specifically in Philosophy with a broad background in philosophers and philosophical topics and a strong background in the philosophy of ethics, as opposed to moral theology. Demonstrated teaching excellence. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Commitment to the success of traditional and non-traditional students from a variety of backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's or doctorate in Philosophy. Community college teaching experience. Broad experience teaching philosophy courses such as Ethics, Logic, and Introduction to Philosophy. Experience using instructional technology to support learning. Experience with academic advising, curriculum development, assessment, and/or college committee work.
