Job description

The University of Virginia invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The appointment is at the level of tenured Full Professor and it will begin on August 25, 2015.

We are seeking someone to extend UVa's long tradition of humanistic inquiry and learning, to develop new research initiatives, and to enhance the Institute's programs both at the University and in partnership with other institutions in the US and abroad. The Director will oversee all academic and administrative aspects of the Institute.

Candidates of outstanding scholarly achievement or distinction in any field of the humanities, humanistic social sciences or the arts are invited to apply. The successful candidate will bring to the position a vision to enhance IHGC activities at the University, nationally, and globally. Demonstrated academic and administrative leadership ability is a requirement. Further qualifications for the position include an interest in intellectual engagement with significant historical and global questions, a commitment to the arts, and ideas for facilitating collaboration among UVA faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students and undergraduates. The director should have a vision for making connections within the humanities and beyond, including an interest in the broad field of the digital humanities, and global and cross-cultural research and pedagogy. Relevant administrative experience (including planning and budget), institutional accomplishment, and an ability to inspire faculty, students, staff and donors are required.
