in Philosophy

Fixed-term contract for up to 3 years

Salary: £30,434 to £37,394 per annum
(including a Housing Allowance of £8,400 per annum)

Exeter College (Oxford) proposes, if there is a suitable candidate, to appoint a Michael Cohen Fellow in Philosophy. The area of research specialisation for this position is Ancient Philosophy.

The position, which is strictly temporary, will be for a period of 36 months (subject to satisfactory progress). It is a fixed-term, non-renewable post, which is intended to provide an opportunity for an outstanding academic at an early stage in their career.

The main duties of the post are to undertake tutorial or class teaching of undergraduates of Exeter College up to a maximum of six (‘weighted’) hours per week averaged over the three eight-week Terms of the academic year; to engage in advanced study and research in Philosophy; to set and mark College examinations; to submit termly reports on the students taught; to provide pastoral care for students; to participate in the undergraduate admissions process; to undertake such duties as may reasonably be required to support the teaching of Philosophy at the College; and to participate in the governance of the College.

The successful applicant will be able to teach undergraduate papers in Ancient Philosophy and either (i) Moral Philosophy or (ii) Metaphysics and Epistemology. The ability to teach other papers may be an advantage.

The successful candidate will have:

  1. The proven ability, or the potential, to provide excellent tutorial and small group teaching in a range of undergraduate topics;
  2. The ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities;
  3. The ability to undertake College administration and duties, and to co-operate in the running of Philosophy in the College, and in College affairs more generally;
  4. By 1 October 2015, candidates must have received confirmation of the award of a PhD or equivalent in Philosophy, and must be within four years of the successful defense of their doctoral dissertation unless exceptional circumstances apply;
  5. Candidates must be of early-career status as defined in the Further Particulars.

The Fellow will be appointed at a point commensurate with experience on Grade 7 of the University’s salary scale (currently £30,434 to £37,394 per annum), inclusive of a College Housing Allowance of £8,400 per annum. A range of other generous benefits is also available.
