Job description

Responsibilities

As Assistant Professor of Fundamental Philosophy you will teach courses at all levels in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Philosophy, and also in study programmes offered at other faculties. You will primarily teach metaphysics, but may also be required to teach other disciplines in philosophy. Your duties also include individual supervision and tutoring of students, e.g. during internships and the writing of Bachelor’s or Master’s theses. Furthermore, you will be involved in the development of education at the Chair and study programme levels.

You will conduct research in line with the research theme of the Center for Contemporary European Philosophy, which is part of the faculty research programme ‘Modernity Contested’. You will closely collaborate with your fellow researchers in the research programme. In addition, you will be involved in further developing the research line and acquiring externally funded research projects.

 Work environment

The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies has about 140 staff. The faculty’s research institute conducts multidisciplinary research and its teaching institute provides discipline-oriented study programmes to approximately 600 students. Research and education are integrated in the faculty’s ten chair groups. Responsibility and solidarity are essential values within the faculty’s culture as they determine collaborative and social behaviour.

 What we expect from you

- you have a PhD in Philosophy;

- you are an experienced and dedicated teacher and have university teaching experience in Philosophy at various levels;

- you have a clear vision on the development and implementation of education programmes in line with the faculty’s policy;

- you should hold a University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or similar qualification, or be willing to obtain this qualification within one year;

- you have experience with individual supervision of students preparing BA or MA theses;

- you have written a number of international scientific publications, also as a postdoctoral researcher;

- you have an established reputation as a researcher;

- you are familiar with the theme of the research programme as evidenced by publications;

- you contribute to scientific debate and are also able to display your expertise in more general public debate;

- you have excellent teaching and communication skills and a cooperative attitude towards colleagues and students;

- you are a native speaker of Dutch and have oral and written proficiency in English at C2 level (or should be able to achieve this level within one year) or you master the English language (oral and written at least C2 level) and should be able to teach courses in Dutch within one year;

- you should have the following competencies: conceptual ability, social awareness, presentation, result focus.

What we have to offer

We offer you:

 - employment: 1,0 fte;

 - a maximum gross monthly salary of € 5070 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 12);

 - in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;

 - salary will depend on qualification and relevant work experience;

 - duration of the contract: in principle for one year; renewal is possible;

 - appointment as of 1 August 2015;

- you will be classified as an Assistant Professor Level 1 or 2 in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
