Job description

The Denison University Women’s and Gender Studies Program invites applications for the 2015-16 Laura C. Harris Visiting Fellowship.  The fellowship will be awarded this year to an outstanding junior or senior scholar, artist, or activist in Women’s and Gender Studies engaged in advanced research in Latina Studies.  (The fellowship will be open to applicants in other areas of specialization in future years.)

 Application Deadline: January 9, 2015

Duration and Responsibilities: Fellowships may be held for a full academic year or for one semester.  Proposed research projects may advance women’s and gender studies scholarship, promote the importance of awareness of women’s and gender issues among the general public, or explore aspects of feminist pedagogy.  The projects must be in the discipline of Women’s and Gender Studies, focusing on Latina Studies; preference will be given to interdisciplinary projects.  Fellows are required to be in residence while working on their research project and to teach one to three courses in their area of expertise depending on the nature of their project, length of stay, and other contributions to the life of the college during their residency. They will engage in at least one additional public intellectual contribution to the program, such as a talk or workshop. Denison is a residential college where students have frequent contact with faculty members; fellows are therefore expected to participate in the life of the program and the college on a regular basis.

Eligibility: Applicants may be affiliated with an academic institution or they may be independent scholars, artists, or activists. Applicants from groups traditionally under-represented in the academy as well as international scholars, artists, or activists who are not U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply.

Junior applicants with an affiliation must hold a Ph. D. or equivalent terminal degree in their field, but not yet be tenured.  Independent scholars, artists, or activists must demonstrate a record of achievement equivalent to that of an emerging professional.

Senior applicants with an affiliation must be tenured at their home institution.  Independent scholars, artists, or activists must demonstrate an outstanding record of professional achievement.

Stipend: The fellowship includes a stipend to support a one- or two-semester residency at Denison University, a moving allowance, library privileges, some administrative support, and assistance in finding housing.

Location: Denison University is a highly selective liberal arts college that emphasizes excellence in both teaching and scholarship.  It is located in the historic village of Granville, Ohio, about thirty miles east of Columbus, Ohio.  The Women’s and Gender Studies Program offers both a major and a minor and forms a lively intellectual community of faculty and students.  It emphasizes critical awareness of and intellectual sensitivity to women's issues; the intersectionality of gender and other aspects of identity, including race, class, age, religion and sexuality; the interdisciplinarity of feminist methods and theories; and the transformative power of connecting the academic study of women's and gender issues with activism.  For more information on the program, see http://denison.edu/academics/womens-studies.
