Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Full-Time, Probationary (Tenure-Track), Nine Month Appointment

College of Arts and Sciences

METROPOLITAN STATE UNIVERSITY, a vibrant and growing public, urban university, is seeking to fill a full time, probationary (tenure-track), faculty position in the Department of Practical Philosophy and Ethics, College of Arts and Sciences, beginning Fall 2015.

 Responsibilities:

Faculty members are expected to demonstrate ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level, engage in scholarly research and activity on topics that are a good fit for this primarily undergraduate institution, provide evidence of continuing preparation and study, contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance and engage in service to the university and community. Outstanding candidates will demonstrate a commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering a student-centered education in a liberal arts and sciences context and will possess the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in philosophy (Area of Specialization—open) by the time of appointment.
  • One year (FTE) of teaching experience at the college level with evidence of effective teaching and student satisfaction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach a broad range of students (encompassing a wide range of ages, cultures, abilities, vocational goals, and levels of academic preparation)
  • Ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate philosophy courses, including the history of philosophy
  • Developed expertise in at least one area of applied ethics (medical, business, information technology, law enforcement) including knowledge of the culture and practices of the relevant professions. Medical ethics, especially nursing ethics, would best complement our current strengths.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to and serving a non-traditional, culturally, economically and linguistically diverse student body.

 The Academic Department:  The department offers undergraduate degrees in philosophy and a minor in practical ethics.  It also provides ethics courses that serve students in a number of other academic and professional programs at the university, e.g. law enforcement, nursing, management, and information technology.

Salary:  Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement
