Job description

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University invites applications for the position of Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar of Ethics for the 2015-2016 academic year.

We seek a scholar or artist with strong interest, expertise, and record of accomplishment in ethics through the lens of any discipline. We seek candidates who are passionate about the teaching and study of ethics in the liberal arts undergraduate curriculum.

The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics provides a compelling physical space and a distinctive forum for DePauw students as they explore their beliefs and values and shape their ethical identities in dialogue with faculty, visiting scholars, local community members and one another. The Institute sponsors lectures and symposia on significant ethical issues and hosts programs at the intersection of professional and personal ethics. The Prindle Institute also assists DePauw faculty members in developing ethics-related research projects and courses that stress ethical perspectives on life and leadership. The Nancy Schaenen Scholar will contribute to the Prindle Institute and the DePauw intellectual community with a portfolio that will include a blend from among the following responsibilities:

  1. Teaching two or more courses during the academic year.
  2. Working with the Prindle Institute undergraduate interns; offering public lectures; leading reading groups; contributing to symposia at the Institute, participating in faculty seminars on ethical issues; consulting with faculty and students on ethics-related projects; creating teaching materials on ethics-related topics.
  3. Contributing as a Resident Scholar to The Prindle Post, as part of the Institute’s effort to engage the public on issues of ethical concern.
  4. Conducting research for publication or creating an artistic work in an ethics-related area.
  5. Directing and organizing a summer seminar-style research/writer’s retreat for visiting scholars.
